New Homes in Odessa, Florida

Odessa was first named in the late 1800’s by the same Russian immigrant that named St. Petersburg, Florida.  Located along the newly constructed rail line, the town of Odessa was originally part of Pasco County (it is now an unincorporated area that sits in both Pasco and Hillsborough counties).  Known for producing turpentine and milled lumber, Odessa grew slowly through the early 1900’s as many sought employment at the large sawmill.  In 1922, a fire reduced the sawmill to ashes, scattering the small population of the area.  The rural community then depended on farming and ranching for most of its modern history.  As Tampa started to grow over the past few years, some of the farms and ranches were sold to housing developers and the suburb has become home to many new families.

The land where Starkey Ranch now sits was a long-time cattle ranch owned by the Starkey family.  It also once held a 75-acre orange grove and a sawmill.  In the late 1990’s, a portion of the ranch was sold to the housing developer that established the Longleaf neighborhood.  In 2013, the rest of the ranch (the remaining 2,500-acres) was sold to Wheelock Communities for the development of the Starkey Ranch community.  Named the Master-Planned Community of the Year in 2016, this newer neighborhood is surrounded by nature and is located alongside the vast Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve.  The new homes are connected by trails and there are several parks where family and friends can meet, relax, play and enjoy the natural flora and fauna of the property.  This area has an excellent school system and a future K-8 school will be built on the property.  There is a public library, community theater and a town square with businesses and a grocery store that allow residents to be connected and surrounded by local conveniences
